Arctic ship HMS Resolute was trapped in the ice & abandoned in 1854. Recovered by an American whaler ship & returned to Queen Victoria in 1856. The British government ordered three desks to be made from the timbers of the ship. One desk was given to President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1880 as a gesture of thanks for the rescue and return of Resolute.
